Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino preferred Davinson Sanchez to Toby Alderweireld against Manchester United in the FA Cup this past weekend.

The Belgium international defender started the FA Cup semi-final tie against United at the Wembley Stadium in London last Saturday evening on the bench and was an unused substitute, as Spurs lost 2-1.

Former Tottenham manager Sherwood was not pleased when the lineups were announced, and said on BT Sport Score on BT Sport 1 this past Saturday afternoon (4:33pm, Saturday, April 21, 2018): “He (Toby Alderweireld) is, without doubt, the best centre-half they have got. I think (Jan) Vertonghen has done brilliantly well. Davinson Sanchez is a mistake waiting to happen.”

Harsh comments
While one can understand why Sherwood was critical of Pochettino’s decision regarding Alderweireld, the former Aston Villa manager was a bit harsh over Davinson Sanchez by claiming that he is “a mistake waiting to happen”.
True, the 21-year-old central defender is not as good as Alderweireld, but there is no doubt over his quality and his calibre.
After all, the Colombia international centre-back, who earns £60,000 per week as salary according to Spotrac.com, has made 26 starts for Spurs in the Premier League this season and played 720 minutes in the Champions League.
Sanchez is the future of Tottenham, and the youngster will only improve if he plays in big games.
