Liverpool’s opener at Newcastle United had more than a hint of controversy about it.
Naby Keita fired Liverpool ahead at St James’s Park.
But the Reds midfielder was greeted by widespread boos around Newcastle’s stadium straight after finding the net.
Magpies defender Fabian Schaer was down injured at the time of Keita’s goal but referee Andre Marriner, nor VAR, saw a reason to disallow the goal.
Straight after the goal, television footage showed Klopp mouthing something to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.
And Tim Sherwood, speaking to Optus Sport at half time, believes the Liverpool manager was repeating the words ‘no foul’ at his opposite number.
Sherwood told Optus Sport: “Clearly no foul. Schar tries to win that ball, throws himself on the floor. You can see Jurgen say there [to Howe] ‘no foul, no foul’.”
No foul?
Yep, Klopp and Sherwood are right – it definitely wasn’t a foul.
Just because the Newcastle defender stayed down – and ultimately went off injured in the second half – it doesn’t mean that the opposing Liverpool player did anything wrong in the build-up.
Overall, it wasn’t good enough for the Magpies this afternoon.
There’s no doubt that Howe has Newcastle playing brilliantly for the most part since the turn of the year, but whether it was Liverpool’s stoic defending, or United’s inability to create something meaningful, the hosts just didn’t do enough.
Even without Keita’s opener, the Reds had more than enough opportunities at the other end and although they didn’t take any of them, Klopp’s side were still far better throughout the 90 minutes.
