Tim Sherwood has told The Analysis Show that if he was to pick between Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Manchester United gaffer Ralf Rangnick for his side, he would be choosing the Gunners manager before Rangnick.

Rangnick watched his side suffer a Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night – as Renan Lodi’s header saw Atleti win 1-0 at Old Trafford, after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. United seem all over the place.

While they remain in the top-four hunt, it is well below pre-season hopes of a title challenge – after the signings of Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and of course, Cristiano Ronaldo. Arsenal, meanwhile, are flying under Arteta.

The Gunners did spent a whole heap of cash in the summer, but they were hardly expected to surpass a top-six finish. But they seem in pole position to achieve fourth spot. Sherwood would pick Arteta, over Rangnick.

“If I had a team, I would be employing Arteta over Rangnick. Long-term, I can see something evolving. He has been in there longer, but I can see something evolving and he will get there – if given time,” Sherwood said.

Sherwood on Arteta, Rangnick: Arsenal boss deserves all plaudits

After a tricky start to the campaign in which Arteta was linked with the sack, the Gunners board gave him time. They gave him the chance to instill his philosophy, identity. He has sparkled in the second half of the season.

Rangnick was always going to struggle. When an interim manager is installed, it rarely works. You simply do not have the time to make your mark. But Rangnick does not know his best team – Arteta does.
