Tim Sherwood has told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (24/10/20 at 2:35 pm) that Tottenham’s ‘most improved’ midfielder last season Giovani Lo Celso ‘cannot get a kick’ now.

It seems as though injuries have held Lo Celso back recently but Sherwood thinks Jose Mourinho isn’t picking him in the middle of the park because he ‘doesn’t want to play that way’.

Even though Spurs let that three-goal slip last week, it has been a very strong start from them following that opening day defeat to Everton, including qualifying for the Europa League.

Whilst Mourinho raved about the football Spurs have played this season, Sherwood disagreed with his comments and shared his thoughts on Lo Celso.

“Lo Celso, at the back end of last season, was the most improved midfielder Tottenham had,” Sherwood told Sky Sports. “And I really enjoyed watching him play.

“He cannot get a kick of the football, at the moment because Jose doesn’t want to play that way. He’s relying on the front three to win him the game and the rest of the players behind have to be responsible and defensive.

“At the moment, it’s working. Jose Mourinho saying there in his interview, ‘we are playing the best football and it’s ‘free [flowing]’. No, it’s not the best football. But they still attack. They still have a threat.”

Lo Celso joined Spurs last summer when his fellow countryman, Mauricio Pochettino, was in charge of the club.

He started off the season slowly and it could be argued that under Mourinho, especially after lockdown, he produced some of his best performances.

It will be interesting to see what role he plays under Mourinho because the Argentinian has that bit of quality on the ball to provide something different in the middle of the park.
