Tottenham have qualified for the knockout stages if the Champions League.
Tottenham Hotspur icon Teddy Sheringham has told the Daily Mirror that he believes an English side can win the Champions League, and believes Spurs are a lot more accomplished in this year’s competition.
Spurs qualified for the knockout stage after two wins against Borussia Dortmund, victories over APOEL Nicosia and Real Madrid and an impressive draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have the small matter of overcoming a meaningless match against APOEL on Wednesday, before awaiting the draw for the last 16 on December 11.
Sheringham, who played for Spurs for two years between 2001 and 2003, claimed that and English side have the quality to hold aloft the Champions League for the first time since Chelsea in 2012 and did not rule out Spurs being that side.
“Tottenham drew away with Real Madrid and beat them at home. Not bad, is it?,” Sheringham said. “They now have a year’s experience in the Champions League and that is showing.
They look more accomplished this season and they have match-winners like Dele Alli and Harry Kane.” Along with Liverpool, Man City, Man United and Chelsea, Sheringham claimed he can “see one of that lot winning the Champions League.”
Spurs’ recent form could be a cause for concern if they are to be realistic about their Champions League hopes, picking up just two points from their last four Premier League outings.
Losses to Arsenal and Leicester City, as well as draws against West Brom and Watford have seen Spurs slip out of the Premier League’s top four.
Following Wednesday’s clash, Spurs then face Stoke City on Saturday in the Premier League at Wembley Stadium in a match they will be desperate to win to get back on track.
