On an alarming run of eight Premier League games without a victory, Newcastle United have the additional problem of having to cope without Jonjo Shelvey for their next two fixtures.

The midfielder was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the 1-0 defeat at home to Everton last night, and, as a consequence, will miss the upcoming trips to face Arsenal and West Ham United.

There is a positive to take from proceedings, however, as, with Shelvey suspended, Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez is likely to recall Isaac Hayden to the starting lineup.

Hayden would relish the opportunity to face Arsenal having left the Gunners without playing a Premier League game for the club.

Committed in the challenge and effective at distributing the ball, Hayden is a good prospect but the 22-year-old has found himself in and out of the side in recent weeks as Benitez has rotated his team.

After joining from Southend United in 2008, Hayden produced some encouraging performances for Arsenal at youth level and demonstrated his versatility, playing several games at centre-back as well as in midfield.

Hayden soon settled in the latter position but found first-team opportunities limited at Arsenal, and, following a loan spell with Hull City, elected to join Newcastle in 2016 to further his career.

Now Hayden has an opportunity to both show Arsenal what he is capable of and prove to Benitez that he deserves to be a regular in the starting lineup.
