Winnall has scored four goals and created another since moving to Derby County on loan from Sheffield Wednesday.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Sam Winnall has revealed whether or not he would like to stay at Derby County beyond his current loan spell.
Winnall moved to Derby on a season-long deal in August, and it is understood there is no agreement in place for the Rams to sign him permanently.
However, that is not to say a full-time deal cannot be facilitated, offering hope to Gary Rowett’s side after four goals and an assist for the Owls loanee in his first seven outings.
But would Winnall be keen on the idea – well he is hardly going to say no is he?
“Of course,” he told the Derby Telegraph. “I’m really enjoying my time here. Everything has been brilliant and the club has been really good for me. They’ve helped me out in so many different ways – not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well.
“That’s credit to the football club – they’ve been brilliant with me and you never know what will happen. You just have to take every day as it comes and see what happens.”
Perhaps more tellingly, Winnall went on to claim he has almost forgotten he is even on loan to Derby.
He added: “The club have been fantastic – they’ve made the transition of moving from Sheffield Wednesday to Derby so easy – and I’ve bedded in so well straight away, because they are a great bunch of lads.
“I am starting to feel a little bit at home here. I love going in to training every day and long may that continue. Since I joined, I don’t think it has once gone through my head that I’m just on loan.
“I want to help this team to finish as high as possible this season. Whether it extends beyond that, who knows? I don’t know – but at the end of the day, all I can do is focus on the now and at the moment, I’m a Derby County player.”
Sheffield Wednesday exploited Winnall’s contract situation to sign him for a cut-price fee from Barnsley in January and stand to make a healthy profit on the 26-year-old, should they opt against reintegrating him at Hillsborough.
Including Winnall, the Owls have seven senior strikers on their books, including the high profile quartet Jordan Rhodes, Steven Fletcher, Gary Hooper and Fernando Forestieri.
