After narrowly missing out on promotion at the end of their 15/16 campaign, Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping for better luck in 2017.

Strengthening in January to boost their promotion push, Wednesday brought in Norwich City striker Gary Hooper, as well as Everton midfielder Aiden McGeady on loan until the end of the season.

Losing just four league games between January and the end of the season, Sheffield Wednesday stormed their way into the play-off places, finishing 6th, facing 3rd placed Brighton in the semi-final.

After a 2-0 home win in the first leg, Wednesday secured a 1-1 draw in the second, securing their place in the play-off final thanks to goals from Ross Wallace and Kieran Lee.

However, heartache was to follow in the final, as Wednesday lost 1-0 to Steve Bruce’s Hull City, despite playing arguably the better football on the day.

Working hard to strengthen for another promotion push in 16/17, Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal brought in 9 players over the summer, including Burnley’s David Jones, Middlesbrough’s Adam Reach and Sunderland’s Stephen Fletcher.

After 11 wins from their first 22 Championship fixtures, Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion push is in full swing, and should they keep hold of their best players over January, there’s no reason why the Owls can’t reach the Premier League come the end of the season.
