Sheffield Wednesday are set to re-shape their squad ahead of another season in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday’s retained list is due this week, according to the Sheffield Star. But which players are out of contract at Hillsborough, and what are their situations?

Inspired by The Clash, HITC asks: Will they stay or will they go now?

Joe Wildsmith

The home-grown goalkeeper will be offered a new deal, although whether he signs it or not remains to be seen. A top prospect he may be, Wildsmith is not going to dislodge Keiren Westwood any time soon and his first-team prospects could be greater elsewhere. As long as the Owls’ offer is at least of equal terms to his existing contract, they will be compensated if he does go elsewhere.

Will he stay? Maybe

Cameron Dawson

Having demoted Jake Kean to fourth-choice this season, it is likely that Wednesday will want Dawson to stay. As with Wildsmith, though, getting out and playing could be at the forefront of his mind. Likewise, one suspects an offer will be made nonetheless.

Vincent Sasso

Wednesday have a year’s option on the Frenchman and while he’s not everyone’s cup of tea, taking that up is perhaps the logical thing to do with the Owls left short in his position on several occasions these past 10 months.

Will he stay? Yes

Claude Dielna

Dielna hasn’t appeared at all under head coach Carlos Carvalhal, who has loaned him out in each of the last two campaigns, and he’ll be moved on for good this time – to the relief of most Wednesdayites.

Daryl Lachman

Lachman was the first Chansiri-era signing, but was never fancied by the manager. He’ll be let go, and probably return to Holland.

Will he stay? No

Urby Emanuelson

Another questionable – and suspiciously un-Carlos-like – recruit, Emanuelson made only one appearance in eight months and has little hope of staying on.

Will he stay? No

Jose Semedo

An important member of the squad, if not the team. Semedo loves it at Wednesday regardless and is likely to extend his Hillsborough stay if a new deal is offered.

Modou Sougou

Though a useful player at times last season, injuries diluted the winger’s impact and he now looks set to move on.

Will he stay? No

Which other players could go?

Loan wingers Callum McManaman and Will Buckley failed to feature as much as they would have liked, so don’t bet on either player returning next season.

The contracts of Lewis McGugan, Filipe Melo and Kean still have a year to run, and McGugan is already on the transfer list. Melo and Kean could yet join him, although the latter’s future will perhaps be determined by what happens to Wildsmith and Dawson.
