The Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper starred in the Championship play-off final defeat on Saturday but faces a fight to feature at Euro 2016.
Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has admitted, as quoted by the Sheffield Star, that he is unsure as to whether his impressive play-off final performance will have boosted his chances of being selected for Euro 2016.
The Republic of Ireland stopper was in fine form at Wembley in the Championship season-closer, making some superb saves and ultimately only being beaten my Mohamed Diame’s spectacular long-range effort late in the second half.
Despite the crushing disappointment for himself and his Owls teammates at missing out on the chance for a return to the Premier League after 16 years away, Westwood emerged from the loss with huge credit as he continued his fine form.
However, the 31-year-old has not played for Ireland since June of last year, and faces a battle to forced his way into Martin O’Neill’s plans for next month’s European Championship despite the injury to Newcastle United’s Rob Elliot.
Westwood faces stiff competition from the likes of Darren Randolph, Shay Given, and David Forde, and admits that he does not know whether or not his display at Wembley on Saturday will have helped his cause.
The Owls star said, as quoted by the Star: “Hopefully I will be in the squad. You will have to ask Martin O’Neill who his number one is.
“I honestly don’t know if the final will have helped my cause. It is a question for the manager.”
Westwood has travelled with the Irish squad for tonight’s final warm-up clash with Belarus in Cork, and will be desperately hoping to get some minutes on the pitch to make a final case for inclusion in France.
