Amaral is one of two Liga NOS players to linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday this week.
Katrien Meire, the Sheffield Wednesday CEO, was pictured in Portugal last week amid speculation linking the Owls with a move for Joao Amaral.
Jornal Record is the latest Portuguese publication to credit Wednesday with interest in the forward, who signed for Benfica from Vitoria de Setubal last month.
It is claimed the Yorkshire side are one of several clubs to make known their desire to take Amaral on loan, should he fail to break into the Eagles’ immediate plans.
And the rumour could have some substance, given the following tweet from Carolyn Radford, Meire’s Mansfield Town counterpart, on Friday.
Of course, there may be other reasons for Meire’s presence in the Iberian peninsular, with a holiday perhaps the most likely.
While Amaral is not the only Portugal-based player said to feature on Sheffield Wednesday’s summer shopping list, with talks to sign Frederico Venancio ongoing, according to the Star.
Venancio, who spent last season on loan to the Owls from Vitoria, is a former teammate of 26-year-old Amaral.
The latter player scored nine goals and set up two in 28 league starts last season, despite playing more often than not in a central or wide attacking midfield role.
