Van Aken left the Dutch side to sign for Sheffield Wednesday last summer.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Joost van Aken paid a visit to former club Heerenveen, who were playing FC Utrecht on Wednesday night – and saw one ex-Owl make a significant contribution.
Van Aken began the campaign at Heerenveen, who were hosting the first leg of their Europa League play-off tie, but left for Wednesday in a deal worth a reported £4 million last August.
And, as revealed on his Instagram story, the Dutchman was back at the Abe Lenstra Stadium to see his old side go 3-0 up within 48 minutes against Utrecht.

But the visitors hit back two minutes later and scored again shortly after that – despite having a man sent off in between – before drawing level when Urby Emanuelson’s strike was deflected in by Heerenveen’s own Dave Bulthuis.
Nevertheless, it was the hosts who ended the tie in front, following Denzel Dumfries’ winner four minutes from time.

Emanuelson spent last season at Hillsborough, but only played 16 minutes in Sheffield Wednesday colours – in a dead-rubber game against Fulham in May 2017.
The former Netherlands international signed for Utrecht last summer, and has played 36 times for his new employers.
