Hammoud has impressed for Sheffield Wednesday’s Under-18s this season.
A Sheffield Wednesday player has been named among world football’s 60 best young talents by the Guardian newspaper, alongside colleagues from Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Oh, and Lilian Thuram’s son.
But given the recent influx of youngsters into the Wednesday first team, his name is one which may have passed by some.
The *other* Bulgarian striker on Hillsborough’s books – after Preslav Borukov – Beirut-born Eyad Hammoud has been something of a secret since his 2017 move to the Owls. Nevertheless, his progress has not gone unnoticed by the Guardian.
The newspaper lists pace and stamina – noting that he once offered to play for three of Lokomotiv Plovdiv’s youth teams on the same day – as two of Hammoud’s key attributes, and claims both Arsenal and Stoke City had the teenager on trial before Sheffield Wednesday snapped him up.
But said interest is no real surprise with Hammoud already a household name back home, where, at the age of 15 years and four months old – two years ago next month – he made his top flight debut for Plovdiv and set up a derby goal. In doing so, Hammoud became the second-youngest player to ever appear in the Bulgarian top division, something he did twice more ahead of his move to Wednesday.
The Owls’ task now will be to keep him under wraps. But if all else fails, they can always pretend he’s Joey Pelupessy, given Hammoud’s resemblance to the current Sheffield Wednesday midfielder – am I right?
