Rangers were tipped to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Dominic Iorfa before he joined Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday
Back in November, The Express claimed that Steven Gerrard wanted to bring one, perhaps even two, new centre-backs to Ibrox during the January transfer window. But only one of Rangers’ mid-season additions comes close, the versatile American Matt Polster.
So why Rangers didn’t push to sign Dominic Iorfa remains a mystery, especially with their back-line looking increasingly shaky over the last few months and threatening to undermine all the great work Gerrard has done.
The Sun claimed in late December that The Gers wanted to sign Iorfa from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a bargain £500,000.
An England U23 international who had fallen out of favour since Nuno Espirito Santo arrived in 2017, a move to Rangers looked like the ideal opportunity for a defender with plenty of potential.
But while Rangers focused their attention on midfielders and forwards, Iorfa slipped away to Sheffield Wednesday, moving to Hillsborough for that bargain fee of just £500,000 (Sky).
And you have to wonder why the Glasgow powerhouses sat back and let Wednesday get their man. Iorfa, a young and athletic centre-back, could have been an upgrade on both Nikola Katic and Joe Worrall and is obviously a far more long-term option than the 38-year-old Gareth McAuley.
If Iorfa gets his career back on track at Wednesday, the logic of Rangers looking elsewhere must be questioned.
