The defender was not happy with the response from some sections of the Hillsborough crowd to Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat on Saturday.

Sheffield Wednesday defender Daniel Pudil has taken to Twitter after comments he made following Saturday’s defeat to Ipswich Town drew widespread criticism.

The loss, which was the Owls’ sixth of the Championship season, drew boos from some sections of the Hillsborough crowd, who vented their displeasure throughout.

Wednesday saw 61 per cent of the ball against the Tractor Boys, but struggled to do anything with it, with their entire back four having more touches than any player on either side bar Barry Bannan, who had the fourth most.

Pudil, who signed for the Yorkshire side on a permanent basis this summer after a successful loan spell, told the Sheffield Star: “Maybe the people sometimes expect a little bit too much from us.

“We tried to keep the ball (against Ipswich) and they started booing us and I don’t think that is the right way.

“It is not what they were doing last season.”

But his comments drew a furious response from some supporters on Twitter, for whom a combination of high ticket prices and the ambition of chairman Dejphon Chansiri – who wants promotion by the club’s 150th birthday next September – vindicates their criticism.

So strong was the response that Pudil felt the need to clarify his earlier comments on Twitter.

“All I wanted to say was that we have to fight together and stay together #swfc #fans #StrongerTogether,” posted the Czech international.

Saturday’s defeat leaves the Owls 10th in the Championship, having lost one less game than they have won now.
