The Scotland international grew up a fan of the Bhoys but insists he is happy at Hillsborough for the time being.

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan has admitted via the Football League Paper that he still dreams of playing for Celtic.

The Airdrie native grew up a Bhoys supporter and was on the club’s books in his early teens.

However, back in 2011, Bannan told the Scottish Herald he had later turned down a place in Celtic’s academy in favour of a move to Aston Villa, after the Bhoys had made him “wait around”.

Yet despite this, the 26-year-old’s love of the Scottish Premiership champions has never waned, and he is keen to pull on those famous green and white hoops at some stage in his career.

“I can’t deny that,” he told the Football League Paper. “I dream of it as a kid and I still do.

“Professionally, you want to play at the highest standard you possibly can, but, deep down, who doesn’t want to play for their boyhood team?

“That will never change but, right now, I couldn’t be happier here.”

Bannan, who became an instant hit upon moving to Wednesday from Crystal Palace a year ago, was a key member of the Owls side which narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion in May – losing to Yorkshire rivals Hull City in the play-off final at Wembley.

As a result, the playmaker – who counts former Parkhead stars Ross Wallace, Glenn Loovens and Gary Hooper among his Hillsborough teammates – earned himself a recall to Gordon Strachan’s Scotland set up earlier this year, and could win his 22nd cap in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Malta.
