The football schedule has been halted due to the death of The Queen.

Despite government guidance stating that sporting events can go ahead this weekend, the Premier League and EFL have taken the decision to cancel this weekend’s fixture list – a decision that has divided the footballing world.

One player who isn’t best pleased with this decision is Sheffield Wednesday’s Josh Windass, and the outspoken attacker has taken to social media to share his thoughts on the matter – expressing sympathy for fans who have already forked out cash for tickets, travel and hotels.

The decision to cancel this weekend’s games is a polarising topic, but Windass does make a valid point here.

The general public, quite simply, can’t afford expenses like this at the moment.

Especially in the Premier League, fans will be travelling from all over the world to watch their teams this weekend, for some this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and now they’ve been left out of pocket and with no football to watch.

In normal circumstances this would be infuriating, but the global cost of living crisis only makes this situation so much worse and the financial burden so much more difficult to deal with.

These are unique circumstances, of course, but in a world where Denmark were forced to play on just one hour after Christian Eriksen had was fighting for his life on the pitch at Euro 2020, it’s understandable why this decision is somewhat difficult to stomach in some circles, especially when it’s ultimately the fans that will suffer.

Hopefully, Sheffield Wednesday and the rest of the clubs in the EFL and Premier League will find a way to reimburse fans on tickets from this weekend’s games, while we can only hope that similar can be done in terms of travel and hotel arrangements for travelling supporters.
