Sheffield Wednesday captain Glenn Loovens has told the Sheffield Star he played through injuries last season.
Loovens appeared 31 times in the Championship, plus a further three times in play-off matches, as the Owls narrowly missed out on a return to the Premier League.
The skipper is yet to feature this season, having suffered an ankle injury at the start of the summer. However, after returning to full training on Monday Loovens, who requested to play in Friday afternoon’s development squad fixture against Birmingham City, hopes to have put his fitness problems behind him.

“I was struggling with the injury all season last year,” the Dutchman told the Sheffield Star. “I played through it with a lot of pain killing injections so I had to get it sorted.”
Loovens played 63 minutes of Wednesday’s 2-0 win at Hillsborough, in which forgotten man Claude Dielna and youngster Warren Clarke scored the Owls’ goals.

Goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, striker Sergiu Bus and former Crystal Palace winger Reise Allassani were all notable inclusions for Neil Thompson’s team, though the latter was forced off after just 35 minutes.
Speaking on his return, Loovens added: “It is always really good to get back out there after an injury.
“I have only been back in full training since Monday but I asked if I could play and hour and I’m glad I did. You can only do so much in training.”
Loovens may have a fight on his hands as he looks to return to Carlos Carvalhal’s first team, with centre-back pairing Tom Lees and Sam Hutchinson conceding twice and keeping as many clean sheets in his absence.
