As much as it may hurt Leeds United fans to look at Sheffield Wednesday to provide them with inspiration, that is arguably exactly what they should be doing after they lost to Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The 1-0 defeat to David Wagner’s side sent the Whites into the relegation zone. And while there is a long, long way to go this season, there appears to already be some concern about whether Garry Monk’s men will be strong enough to keep their heads above water.

The Peacocks have won just once in the Championship this term, and sit third from bottom currently with just four points on the board after six games.

But the fortunes of their Yorkshire rivals last season should be giving them belief about what they can still achieve this term.

Rewind the clock back one year, and it is highly likely that the same thoughts of concern were going through the minds of Owls supporters.

Wednesday had won on the opening day of the campaign, but subsequently failed to pick up another victory in the league until they faced Fulham in mid-September, picking up five points from their opening six fixtures – one more than Leeds have bagged this year.

Despite the lacklustre start – which, like Leeds this time around, occurred after a managerial change during the summer – Carlos Carvalhal’s men went on to finish in the top six, and subsequently managed to reach the play-off final where only a moment of brilliance denied them promotion.

Few who have watched Leeds this term will suggest that they have the ability to put themselves in a promotion picture that also involves the likes of Newcastle, Aston Villa, Norwich City, and perhaps Wednesday themselves, but they should be reminding themselves that they are a work in progress.

And if they can develop some confidence by getting some more points under their belt in the near future, they may just begin to believe that they can replicate something like what Wednesday managed to achieve last term.
