Sheffield Wednesday appear to be at the front of the queue for Grant Hanley, despite interest from Birmingham City and Villa.

Sheffield Wednesday may just have a played a very clever game in the race to sign Grant Hanley from Newcastle United.

Wednesday have held off bidding for Hanley until the opportune time, and they now said by the Daily Mirror [3 July, page 47] to be willing to pay £5.5 million for the Scottish international.

The Owls have been tracking Hanley for some time, but have faced competition for the 25-year-old’s signature.

Both Aston Villa and Birmingham City have been said to be interested in Hanley by the Chronicle.

However, Wednesday may have picked the perfect time to strike a deal with Newcastle.

Both Villa and Birmingham appear to have their attention turned on other targets at the moment.

Villa have announced the signing of John Terry today, while Birmingham have snapped up Marc Roberts from Barnsley.

It means that Wednesday may now have a clear run to sign Hanley, and that could aid them as they aim to convince the powerful centre-back to move to Hillsborough.
