Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan would surely welcome a reunion with Paul Lambert at Hillsborough, judging by his past comments about the Scottish manager to the Birmingham Mail.

Bannan and Lambert worked together at Aston Villa earlier in their respective careers, and it seems that they could link up again.

Lambert has become the heavy favourite to take over at Wednesday, following Carlos Carvalhal’s departure.

Lambert was actually the manager who sold Bannan at Villa, but the pair have a good relationship.

And Bannan was full of praise for his former manager back in 2012. He said: “This is the happiest I’ve ever been at Villa – and a lot of that is down to the gaffer.

“He has been a breath of fresh air for this club. He’s just been brilliant.

“The sessions are fantastic and the lads really enjoy coming into training each morning and striving to improve each day ahead of the weekend game.

“But, more than that, he’s just a great boss. His man-management skills are second to none.

“He believes in his players, he trusts his players and that really comes across to us as a group.

“He’s just so positive. He has real belief in his players and where we’re going as a team and as a club. I’ve never met anyone with such focus and drive.”

Bannan’s past glowing praise of Lambert should fill Wednesday fans with confidence, if the 48-year-old does take charge.

If Lambert does take charge at Wednesday, he has a big task on his hand’s to arrest the Owls’ slide.

Wednesday were beaten 3-0 by Burton Albion in their last match, and they have won just one of their last 10 outings.

The Owls are next in action against League Two side Carlisle United in the FA Cup on Saturday.
