According to a report from The Sun, Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Hooper is attracting attention from the likes of West Brom, Brighton and Crystal Palace after his sensational start to the Championship season.
Hooper has been exceptional for the Owls this term, scoring seven goals in 11 league appearances to sit joint top of the division’s goalscoring charts.
The Sun reports that Wednesday would be looking for £6 million before they allowed the 29-year-old to move to one of the top flight sides keen on his signature.
But while his age and previous Premier League experience may make it more difficult for the Owls to ask for much more than the reported asking price, Carlos Carvalhal’s men would surely be foolish to consider selling the forward for that amount.
Hooper has been so influential this season, and his form hints that he could play a crucial role in inspiring the side to bounce back from their slightly lacklustre start and put themselves in the promotion hunt yet again this year.
None of his teammates have scored more than twice in the league, while Wednesday’s other strikers have scored just three goals between them.
And the struggles that Jordan Rhodes has endured since arriving at Hillsborough should surely convince Carvalhal that trying to replace an in-form striker will not be an easy task, and having a significant boost to their funds will barely make that task any easier.
Rhodes has scored three goals in 29 league games since arriving for £10 million – fee reported by the Daily Mirror – so Carvalhal surely cannot allow himself to think that selling Hooper for a substantial fee can be in the club’s best interests if he is scoring at the rate he currently is, and thus, £6 million should be the least that the Owls demand for their top goalscorer.
