Sheffield Wednesday’s Fernando Forestieri celebrates after scoring their first goal

Sheffield Wednesday have the old Fernando Forestieri back, head coach Carlos Carvalhal has told BBC Radio Sheffield.

Forestieri has been a much talked about figure this season, having failed to rediscover the form that saw him score 15 goals in a talismanic debut campaign at Hillsborough.

The Italian was dropped – and not for the first time this term – for Wednesday’s last game, which ended in a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Ipswich Town.

However, the international break looks to have reinvigorated Forestieri, according to Carvalhal.

“Let me tell you also about Fernando that I think we have Fernando back again; really back again,” the Portuguese offered, unprompted. “These two weeks, but especially this week, he’s back very, very strong; very powerful, with a fantastic attitude.

“I am sure that if he expresses, and he will express of course, on Saturday what he is doing during these two weeks we will be with (the) better Fernando again.

“And I am very happy of course about that, me and all of us, because we are waiting for the best of Fernando and I think, in reality, he is back 100 per cent; the Fernando from the big days in Sheffield Wednesday.”

Having won six of their previous 10 fixtures ahead of October’s trip to Derby County, Wednesday had looked on course for another top-six finish.

However, a run of two straight defeats has knocked the Owls all the way down to tenth ahead of Saturday’s encounter with Fulham, who have won their last two fixtures by an aggregate score of 7-0.

The Cottagers are unlikely to be enthused by Carvalhal’s comments, with Forestieri having won all four of his previous games against them, and scored against them at Hillsborough last season.
