Leeds United head coach Thomas Christiansen has told The Yorkshire Evening Post that Matthew Pennington will feature against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

With Liam Cooper suspended for the Championship game at the Hillsborough Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Pennington is set to take his place.

The 22-year-old central defender joined Leeds on a season-long loan deal from Premier League club Everton in the summer transfer window.

The centre-back has had injury issues this season, but the youngster is now fully fit.

Pennington was signed in the summer in order to enhance the quality of the Leeds squad, but he has the chance on Sunday to stake a genuine claim for a spot in Christiansen’s starting lineup on a regular basis.

Wednesday are a big club and have one of the strongest teams in the Championship, and it will not be easy for the Leeds defence.

Everton-owned Pennington needs to be on top of his game from start to finish, and if he performs well, then he could well establish himself in the Leeds starting lineup in the coming weeks and months.
