Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals Aston Villa are trying to sign former Owls midfielder Glenn Whelan from Stoke City, according to the Daily Mail.

It’s coming up a decade since Whelan – one of Wednesday’s ‘Kings of Cardiff’ – left Hillsborough to sign for the Potters in a £500,000 deal.

And despite being three years the wrong side of 30, the Irishman has remained a Premier League regular for much of that time.

On paper at least, Whelan’s signing would be something of a coup for Aston Villa, who are claimed to have seen a half-a-million-pound bid turned down by Mark Hughes’ side.

And with Stoke only said to want another £300,000 to part with the player, some Wednesday supporters are urging their club to enter the running – with Owls assistant Lee Bullen, a former teammate of the Dubliner, receiving an ear-bashing on Twitter.

Whelan scored 14 goals and made another six in 155 Wednesday appearances, and was the Owls’ player of the year in 2007.

Should Hillsborough head coach Carlos Carvalhal rival Aston Villa for his signature this summer?
