Sheffield Wednesday fans are calling for a swift end to the George Hirst saga, after Manchester United were named as new frontrunners in the race to sign the England Under-19 striker (the Mirror).

Hirst has been offered a contract by Wednesday – his boyhood team – who are refusing to play him until it’s been signed.

With no breakthrough yet and amid long-standing interest from Premier League clubs, it is looking increasingly likely that Hirst will leave Hillsborough when his existing deal ends this summer.

And after a season of speculation, several Owls fans appear to have reached the end of their tether.

Here’s what they’re saying on Twitter…

Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay – who inherited the Hirst situation upon his January appointment – told BBC Radio Sheffield on Monday that he’ll be “unbelievably happy” if the 19-year-old extends his stay at Hillsborough.

However, the Dutchman conceded it would be “very difficult to say no” to a club of Manchester United’s stature.

Hirst’s father, David, was also courted by Manchester United during his Hillsborough career, and later expressed regret at having never made the switch to Old Trafford.
