Sheffield Wednesday look set to host Pedro Caixinha’s Rangers at Hillsborough later this month.

Less than a month before the new season starts, Sheffield Wednesday have signed just one new player, released no information about the kits they intend to wear, and said nothing of the home pre-season friendly they promised in April.

As The Wednesday Week reported at the time, the Owls’ powers-that-be claimed to have spoken to “various clubs” about a “high-profile” friendly to mark their 150th anniversary, but had encountered issues with dates.

“Real Madrid was mentioned but they could only come after the season has started. [Wednesday are] currently talking to one un-named club who say ‘they can’t decide until they have a new coach’,” TWW added.

But, according to The Scottish Sun, the Championship side have finally found their opponents in the shape of Glasgow Rangers – whose manager Pedro Caixinha did his coaching badges with Wednesday’s first team coach Lee Bullen – with a 30 July date proposed.

Rangers last visited Hillsborough in 2013 for a friendly encounter that attracted 16,000 fans, many of whom had travelled south for a Wednesday evening encounter from which the Owls emerged 1-0 winners.

But four years on, it’s fair to say that Wednesdayites are feeling somewhat underwhelmed by the prospect of another Rangers dual, given what was said earlier this year.
