Sheffield Wednesday have sent a Twitter message of goodwill to Tommy Spurr after the Owls academy graduate announced his retirement from professional football due to injury.

The 31-year-old has not played since suffering a hip injury in January while on loan at Fleetwood Town from Preston North End, who released him at the end of the season.

Spurr came through the ranks at Hillsborough in the mid-2000s and made 211 senior appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring seven goals according to the official Wednesday website.

The Leeds-born left-back made his debut with the Owls in April 2006 during a 1-1 draw against Reading at Hillsborough and one goal in particular is fondly remembered by the club’s fanbase.

Spurr’s first-minute opener against bitter city rivals Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in February 2009 helped Wednesday complete the derby double, beating the Blades twice in a season for the first time in 95 years.
