The Owls striker missed Tuesday night’s Championship game as Garry Monk suffered his first defeat as Hillsborough boss.
A number of Sheffield Wednesday fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the news that Steven Fletcher could return to action for the Owls in Saturday’s Championship meeting with Wigan Athletic at Hillsborough.
The 32-year-old picked up an ankle injury in the closing stages of last Saturday’s 4-1 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium and missed out on Tuesday evening’s defeat against Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.
Wednesday lacked a cutting edge in attack without the injured top-scorer and Sam Winnall did not particularly impress in his absence, spurning two gilt-edged opportunities to put the Owls ahead and overall failing to click with strike partner Atdhe Nuhiu.
The Owls succumbed to Tom Eaves’s first goal for the Tigers, a 72nd-minute header from Eric Lichaj’s cross, which inflicted the first defeat of Garry Monk’s reign as Hillsborough manager.
“It was obviously a blow for us and a big miss,” Monk is quoted by the SWFC website as saying. “He had a kick on his ankle on Saturday, he came in on Sunday and it had swollen up. He wasn’t ready for this game but the physios are very hopeful that he will be available for Saturday.”
