Given some of the tales shared by Charlton Athletic fans about Katrien Meire, it was perhaps no surprise that her appointment by Sheffield Wednesday at the start of January was met with concern by the Hillsborough faithful.
Six weeks in, however, and she is yet to do anything noticeably terrible… although there was one perhaps ill-advised supporter questionnaire which may or may not have had her name on it.
In fact, some have gone as far as to suggest that Meire has done a lot more good than bad in her early days as Wednesday’s CEO – and the Belgian is even being given credit for the previously unthinkable breakthrough regarding George Hirst.
Hirst, who is the son of legendary Owls striker David Hirst and considered one of the club’s most promising young talents in decades, looked to be on his way out of Hillsborough after failing to sign a new contract and then being criticised publicly for doing so.
Since the alleged stand-off emerged, the 19-year-old has found himself frozen out by Sheffield Wednesday at every level – even training away from his teammates.
As of this week, however, Hirst is back in the picture, and could even feature for the first team in the coming weeks and months, once he’s built up his fitness – although it remains to be seen whether or not a new deal can still be agreed.
But is the most hated woman in Charlton behind the sudden U-turn? These Owls fans seem to think so…
