A number of Sheffield Wednesday fans have criticised Newcastle loanee Jacob Murphy on Twitter after the winger’s display in the Owls’ 2-1 defeat to Preston North End at the weekend.

Wednesday were overtaken by Alex Neil’s men in the Championship table after Daniel Johnson scored twice from the penalty spot at Deepdale. Steven Fletcher had given the visitors a lifeline with 12 minutes remaining, but they could not find an equaliser.

It was a disappointing afternoon for Murphy, who was replaced by Fernando Forestieri at the break. Whoscored.com shows that Murphy completed just five accurate passes. No player who started the game completed fewer passes than the 24-year-old – of course, he did only play 45 minutes.

After a tough spell at Newcastle to date, and a fairly underwhelming stint on loan at West Brom during the second-half of last season, it had appeared that Murphy may be ready to prove his critics wrong after marking his Owls debut with a goal in the win over Barnsley.

But it appears that his form since then has left plenty of Wednesday supporters wondering whether he is going to prove to be a good signing for Lee Bullen’s side. He has struggled to make an impact and is still awaiting his first assist since arriving at Hillsborough.

Bullen’s decision to replace Murphy with Forestieri at the break looked to be a popular one, and some of the supporters clearly want to see a lot more from the Magpies man after a fairly poor run of form in the last few games.
