Sheffield Wednesday striker Lucas Joao has won the Championship Goal of the Month award for December, with his goal against Blackburn Rovers picking up 55 per cent of the public vote.

Although the Owls fell to a 4-2 defeat at Ewood Park on December 1, the 25-year-old scored a sensational goal in the 62nd minute as he received the ball outside the box, took a touch and unleashed a ferocious drive that was still rising as it hit the back of the net.

Joao, whose league goal tally this season stands at eight from 20 games (Transfermarkt), saw off strong competition from Stoke City attacker Tom Ince and Birmingham City striker Omar Bogle to claim the monthly accolade.

Following the EFL’s announcement, which was shared on Twitter by the Wednesday website, some Owls fans took to the platform and shared their thoughts:

In addition to Joao’s award, Wednesday apprentice Lewis Farmer also picked up an accolade for his goal against Stoke City, his dummy against an opposition defender and drive from a right angle yielding him the League Football Education’s December Goal of the Month award with 43 per cent of the votes.
