The Owls owner told a fan forum he plans to put the Championship club on the market. Supporters’ opinion on the announcement has been split.
Sheffield Wednesday fans have been hit with a bombshell after owner Dejphon Chansiri said he will be putting the Championship club up for sale.
The Thai businessman bought the Owls in early 2015 from former Portsmouth and Leicester owner Milan Mandaric.
In his first two full seasons, the South Yorkshire club finished in the Championship playoff places.
However, Wednesday were not able to seal the ultimate goal of Premier League promotion on either occasion and, since those two campaigns, things have taken a downturn.
Last season they could only manage a 15th-placed finish in the Championship, while this term, they sit a lowly 18th in the table.
In addition, the club was under a transfer embargo for much of the summer, while manager Jos Luhukay has come under criticism from some sections of the fanbase.
Speaking at a fan forum on Wednesday night, Chansiri suggested there would be a lot of interest in Wednesday despite their previous off-field issues.
“Sometimes I don’t feel like I do good enough and it makes me sad,” he told the people in attendance, as per the club’s Twitter page.
“I will say this official to journalists and all – I will put this club on the market and I believe many people will want to buy.”
Following Chansiri’s comments, some Wednesday fans took to Twitter to express their opinion, with those dismayed at his decision and others welcoming his prospective departure:
