Sheffield Wednesday fans react on Twitter to Marco Matias’ Fulham performance

Matias was making his first Sheffield Wednesday start in exactly a year.

With a play-off place already sealed, Carlos Carvalhal handed several lesser spotted players a chance to impress in Sheffield Wednesday’s season finale against Fulham.

But after going ahead through Sam Winnall’s early strike at Hillsborough, the Owls soon found themselves up against it when Neeskens Kebano equalised and Marco Matias – one of those supposedly out to impress – saw red.

The Portuguese winger had not started a league game in exactly a year, but brought a premature end to his season with a mindless flying lunge at Sone Aluko on the stroke of half time.

Naturally, Wednesday found the second half tough going against one of the Championship’s best footballing sides, who eventually secured the points 11 minutes from time when Kebano flicked in Lucas Piazon’s free kick.

And in the eyes of many Wednesday fans, Matias, who announced himself with a memorable goal against Leeds United 21 months ago, has effectively ended his Hillsborough career as well.
