Commenting on social media, Lee explained that he has undergone surgery on his troublesome hip injury and is out of action until further notice.
SkySports presenter David Garrido reported via Twitter that Lee is expected to be out for three to four months.
This leaves the possibility that Lee could return at the end of the campaign, but for now the Owls have to plan for life without him.
His injury increases the pressure on Sam Hutchinson to stay fit, and while Wednesday are not short of numbers in midfield, they do at least have the option of making a move in the transfer market to bring in a replacement, temporary or permanent.
