The former Barnsley man joined Wednesday on a season-long loan deal from Championship rivals Derby County in the summer transfer window.
Butterfield has made just two starts and six substitute appearances in the Championship for Wednesday so far this season, providing one assist in the process.
The win against Millwall at the Hillsborough Stadium on Tuesday evening means that Wednesday are now 14th in the Championship table with 20 points from 15 matches, just three points behind sixth-placed Leeds United.
