Gary Hooper had given Wednesday the lead in the 76th minute but Kieran Westwood gave away a penalty which Clayton Donaldson then converted.
The three points then stayed in Birmingham, when Lukasz Jutkiewicz headed home in the 90th minute to give Birmingham City the win.
In terms of blame, there is no doubt that Glenn Loovens was at fault for the winning goal.

His failure to step out left Jutkiewicz with the opportunity to stay onside in the box and then head home the winner.
The 32-year-old Dutchman was playing his first game of the season for the Owls and in fairness to him, rust was to be expected.
The experienced defender has been out of action since July after picking up an ankle injury and it could be that he just needs games to get back to his level.
But for some Sheffield Wednesday fans the time has come for the club to move on from the veteran, believing he has been going downhill for some time.
