Sheffield Wednesday fans have taken to Twitter to heap a huge amount of praise upon Gary Hooper after the striker impressed during the Owls’ important victory over Newcastle on Saturday.

Despite winning their most recent game, Carlos Carvalhal’s men went into their fixture with the automatic-promotion chasers off the back of a patchy run of form with two defeats and two draws coming in the four games before the midweek win over already-relegated Rotherham.

Nevertheless, the Owls surprised the Magpies as goals from Tom Lees and Steven Fletcher saw them take a 2-0 lead during the second-half, meaning that Jonjo Shelvey’s late reply was simply a consolation for Rafa Benitez’s men.

Although he did not get onto the scoresheet, Hooper’s display at Hillsborough was lauded by a large portion of the Wednesday fans.

The striker went into this week having not played for the first-team since mid-November, but has managed to get around an hour under his belt during both games, and Wednesday supporters highlighted how much they had clearly missed the forward – who has scored five league goals this term – following his extremely positive performance on Saturday, which vindicated Carvalhal’s decision to start with Jordan Rhodes and Fernando Forestieri on the bench.
