The Portuguese defender is on loan at Sheffield Wednesday until the summer.
Sheffield Wednesday fans are reacting on Twitter after Frederico Venancio reiterated his desire to remain at Hillsborough beyond the end of his initial loan spell.
Venancio arrived at Wednesday from hometown team Vitoria Setubal in August, and has taken advantage of the Owls’ injury crisis to establish himself as a first team regular in recent weeks.
Jos Luukay’s side have an option to sign Venancio on a permanent basis this summer, although the 25-year-old extended his Vitoria contract in case Wednesday opt against doing so.
The Owls, who tied another centre-back, Jordan Thorniley, to a new three-and-a-half-year contract on Thursday, expect to have Tom Lees back among their defensive options over the coming weeks, while Joost van Aken could also oust Venancio before the end of the campaign.
Asked if any talks had taken place to extend his spell at Sheffield Wednesday, Venancio told BBC Radio Sheffield: “I love Sheffield to be honest, I love this club also. I will try to do my best so that at the end of the season they [activate] the option, but it’s not up to me. What is in my hands, I will try to do my best to go for it, but after that it’s the chairman’s decision.”
Venancio, who added that he sees this season as a ‘trial’ spell, continued: “Even now I don’t know what is going to happen, if I return or if I stay. But for me I want to stay. That is my big goal.”
Venancio’s comments, like most topics involving Sheffield Wednesday this season, appear to have split the Owls’ fanbase on Twitter.
