Sheffield Wednesday’s dream of a Premier League return crumbled on Saturday evening as they were beaten 1-0 by Hull City in the Championship play-off final.
The Owls had seen off third placed Brighton and Hove Albion with a 3-1 aggregate win in the semi-finals, and headed down to Wembley in high spirits.

Having been relegated from the Premier League back in 2000, Wednesday fans were hoping that their 16-year stay outside the top flight would finally come to an end – but they were left heartbroken in North London.
In a tense and tight encounter, it was Hull who ran out 1-0 winners as Mohamed Diame’s long-range strike found the top corner to send the Tigers back to the Premier League.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Fernando Forestieri looks dejected
Wednesday fans will be hurting and will look to next season, but some fans have been taking to Twitter to criticise the performances of forwards Gary Hooper and Fernando Forestieri.
The two players went into the game having hit 28 goals between them this season, but neither could pose any real threat to the Hull defence in disappointing afternoons for both players.

Fans suggested that manager Carlos Carvalhal got his tactics wrong, as Forestieri should have been used differently to supply Hooper, rather than playing right up top with him.
Ultimately, supporters felt that the duo froze on the biggest stage and despite having good seasons, they were non-existent at Wembley – and that’s what handed Hull the win.
