A number of Sheffield Wednesday fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the club’s social media post paying tribute to Gary Hooper, who has completed a move to New Zealand side – and Australian A-League competitor – Wellington Phoenix.

The 31-year-old signed for the Owls on a loan deal from Norwich in January 2016 before moving to Hillsborough permanently and, in three and a half years at the club, he played a total of 89 games in all competitions.

Hooper’s time at Wednesday came to an end following the conclusion of the 2018-19 season when he was released by the Owls along with five other senior players at the end of their contracts at Hillsborough.

With the Owls currently shorn of attacking quality besides Steven Fletcher – Atdhe Nuhiu, Sam Winnall and Jordan Rhodes have scored just three goals between them this term – a few fans bemoaned the fact that Hooper was let go and longed for him to still be on their books.

Here is some of the social media reaction :

Hooper, valued at £1.4million by Transfermarkt, made just six appearances last season for Wednesday, scoring once and claiming one assist, according to Transfermarkt.
