It was a stance they took mainly on principle, with Bruce only joining them months earlier.
Newcastle got their way in the end amid a bitter legal dispute, and it is not really looking worth it for Toon owner Mike Ashley right now.
After seven games, Newcastle sit in 19th place with just one win, a surprise win away at Tottenham which they have failed to build on.
