Some Sheffield Wednesday fans are ready for the Owls to sever their ties with Gary Hooper.

Striker Hooper cost the club around £3 million from Norwich three years ago, and was an integral past of the side that reached the Championship play-off final a few months later.

The 30-year-old has scored or assisted 41 goals in 83 games for Wednesday in total, but hasn’t featured at first team level since Boxing Day 2017.

Despite appearing in back-to-back Under-23 fixtures earlier this month, Hooper has continued to experience pain and is awaiting a second opinion from a doctor, according to the Owls manager Jos Luhukay.

And with Hooper’s contract – which is thought to be one of the most financially rewarding at Hillsborough – due to expire at the end of this season, the calls for his release are growing.

Fellow strikers Steven Fletcher, Lucas Joao and Atdhe Nuhiu have each scored goals in Hooper’s absence, while Sam Winnall is also on the books at Sheffield Wednesday – albeit sidelined himself.

What should Wednesday do with Hooper?
