Sheffield Wednesday have regressed this season, but their chairman is standing by his recent business.
Dejphon Chansiri has brushed aside criticism of Sheffield Wednesday’s recent recruitment – causing yet more bemusement within the Owls’ support base.
The Wednesday chairman has provided vast amounts of money with which to improve the playing squad at Hillsborough, but finds his side closer to the Championship’s relegation places than they are the top six.
An unprecedented injury crisis is perhaps the biggest contributor to Wednesday’s downfall, although many of those who have struggled in recent weeks were signed during the Chansiri era.
Speaking at Friday’s Steering Group meeting, however, the Thai businessman refused to blame his team of recruitment advisers for the Owls’ current issues.
“I don’t think our recruitment has been wrong but the players are still human beings. Sometimes they can play good. Sometimes they can play bad,” he said, as quoted by the Sheffield Star. “I believe we have done good recruitment otherwise we would not have gone to Wembley and finished fourth.
“We have been unlucky with a lot of injuries (this season). We also had a lot of injuries in the first year but nobody noticed. At that time, we had a loan window but now there is no loan window. It doesn’t mean that in the last two years we have not had injuries.”
Many Wednesdayites do not agree with Chansiri’s assessment, however, with some of them concerned about what may happen in the coming transfer windows, given how close they are to Financial Fair Play limits.
