Sacked on Christmas Eve, the Portuguese tactician has returned to work just four days later with bottom-of-the-table Premier League strugglers Swansea City handing him a contract until the end of the season.
But will anyone join Carvalhal in swapping Wednesday for South Wales? It’s fair to say Owls fans are getting a little jittery ahead of the January transfer window with speculation inevitably set to link a number of their star players with a sudden move to the Liberty Stadium.
And there’s one player in Wednesday’s squad that stands out as Swansea’s ideal January signing. With ten goals in 22 Championship starts this season, Gary Hooper has scored one less goal than the entire Swans squad in 2017/18.
Wilfried Bony has been hit, miss and now injured, leaving 20-year-old Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham to lead the line for a club who found themselves in that usually damning position of being bottom at Christmas. Clearly, a striker is needed.
The Sun claimed in October that Hooper, who is enjoying his best season as a Wednesday player, is on the radar of fellow Premier League survival hopefuls Brighton, West Brom and Crystal Palace.
But now that Carvalhal is in the hotseat, it seems only a matter of time before Swansea’s name is mentioned.
