Eddie Nketiah was unable to have an impact from the bench as Leeds United recorded a stalemate against Sheffield Wednesday over the weekend.
Sheffield Wednesday fans on Twitter have hit out at Jermaine Beckford for his comments about Leeds United striker Eddie Nketiah.
In the second half, Nketiah elbowed Wednesday player Joey Pelupessy in the face, with the home fans demanding that the player be red-carded for his actions. But it was an action in play which former Leeds man Beckford thought was accidental and was not deserving of a red.
“He’s not meant it,” Beckford told Sky Sports (26/10/2019 at 2:40 pm). “For me, he’s putting his arms up, he’s trying to pin the defender and sometimes these things happen. It’s unfortunate. He’s a small guy. He’s just trying to get his arm into the defender’s chest.”
Referee Tim Robinson didn’t issue a card to Nketiah, who was trying to protect the ball when he was backing in on Pelupessy.
The question was whether or not Nketiah had any intention in his actions, as Beckford was clear in his stance, and the Wednesday fans not impressed with his comments.
His comments about Nketiah were shut down by some Wednesday supporters, who felt the former Leeds man was simply being biased towards his former club.
Beckford suggested that because Nketiah is of a smaller frame to his opponents, he was trying to do his utmost best to win the physical battle, hence the accidental elbow.
VAR is not being used outside of England’s top-flight and there are some Wednesday fans who think that he would have been given his marching orders had the system been in place in the second-tier.
Nonetheless, the game ended up finishing goalless, with both defences and goalkeepers producing strong performances on the day.
