Sheffield Wednesday could be down to the bare bones against Reading on Friday, with up to 10 first-team regulars set to miss out.
A number of fringe players could therefore be called into action by Carlos Carvalhal, and the timing of one’s return to social media – having initially signed up in 2015 – has sparked murmurings of a most unlikely recall.
Lewis McGugan hasn’t featured for the Owls all season and wasn’t even assigned a squad number, despite being fully fit and having scored six goals in 17 outings last term.
And after teammate Liam Palmer sent a message to the 28-year-old on Twitter on Wednesday, the right-back was inundated with replies regarding McGugan.
Wednesday are sweating on the fitness of midfield trio Sam Hutchinson, Ross Wallace and Almen Abdi ahead of Reading’s visit, whose absence could pave the way for McGugan’s return to contention.
The former England Under-21 international arrived at Hillsborough from Watford in 2015 following a successful loan spell, and still has another year to run on his deal after this one.
