Sheffield United will have to wait a little longer to seal their promotion back to the Championship.
The Blades have been stuck in League One since 2011 and have had a number of near misses to get back to England’s second tier.
Last night they had hoped to clinch promotion, with it mathematically possible depending on two results.
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder
They did their bit by beating Coventry City 2-0 through goals from Leon Clarke and John Fleck, but they had needed Fleetwood Town to drop points.
Uwe Rosler’s Fleetwood kept them waiting, by beating Oxford 3-1.
Sheffield Wednesday fan and former England captain Michael Vaughan was amused by the Blades’ big night stalling, taunting them on Twitter.
United’s promotion is though seemingly inevitable. They have a six point gap at the top, and are 13 clear of Fleetwood.
A win at Northampton this weekend will seal it regardless of other results, but fail to do so and a bit of doubt might creep in. They can’t blow it from here though surely?
As for Sheffield Wednesday, they hope not to be playing in the same division as the Blades next season, but face a tough battle to clinch promotion to the Premier League.
Their form has been poor although they rallied in midweek to reclaim sixth place. Even if they get into the play-offs, coming through them is a tall order.
Both Sheffield clubs have experienced play-off misery in recent seasons. This time for the Blades at least, they seem set to spare themselves the potential heartache by landing an automatic promotion spot.
