Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal speaks out on rumours Leicester made a £1m bid for George Hirst.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal has spoken publicly about rumours linking Leicester City with a move for striker George Hirst.

The Daily Mail reported on July 19 that the Foxes had a £1m bid for Hirst rejected by Wednesday, with Arsenal, Everton, Manchester United and Newcastle United all thought to be keeping tabs on the situation as well.

However, Carvalhal – who is currently away with the first team squad in Portugal as part of their pre-season preparation – knows nothing of any offer for the 18-year-old.

“I don’t know anything about that. I’m in Portugal. I am far away from England. I haven’t talked with anybody,” the Portuguese told the Sheffield Star.

Carvalhal also spoke about why Hirst had not been left at home for that tour and has hinted that first team opportunities could be difficult to come by for the teenager next season:

“We have two positions for six strikers so it didn’t make any sense to bring the boy just to watch the games and not have a chance to play.”

Carvalhal currently has a number of experienced attackers on the books at Hillsborough in the shape of Steven Fletcher, Fernando Forestieri, Lucas Joao, Atdhe Nuhiu, Jordan Rhodes and Sam Winnall.

Hirst has earned many admirers over the past 12 months after scoring 40 goals in all competitions in 2016/17 and impressing at the Toulon Tournament with England.
