Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal’s comments may suggest Newcastle United need to reduce their asking price for Grant Hanley

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with Newcastle United defender Grant Hanley for much of the summer so far.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has told the Yorkshire Post that his defensive targets are ‘too expensive’, which suggests Newcastle United may have to reduce their asking price if they are to sell Grant Hanley.

Newcastle are believed to be looking to offload the Scottish international this summer, with Wednesday the most likely buyers.

The Owls have been looking to sign the 25-year-old for much of the summer so far, but are yet to complete a deal.

And Carvalhal has suggested that Newcastle’s asking price may be too expensive.

The Portuguese boss said: “It is not easy to bring in players at the level of our team. Everything is very expensive and we try to do our best.”

The Daily Mirror have suggested that Newcastle are looking for £5.5 million for Hanley.

And it may be that Newcastle could risk missing out on a sale, unless they lower their demands.

Hanley only made 10 appearances for the Magpies in the Championship last term.

The powerful defender is, however, a proven performer in England’s second tier, and Newcastle may deem their current asking price to be fair, given the expensive nature of other transfers across the country.
